Gales for northern Europe, thundery downpours in the southeast


New Year's Day
The new year will start mainly bright and dry for the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearics though there will be some cloudy for southern Portugal and southwestern Spain. It will be a dry and fine day too for Corsica, Sardinia and much of Italy though there may be some cloud in the north. A powerful low pressure system over the southern Aegean Sea will bring high winds, thunderstorms and heavy downpours to Greece and Turkey on Tuesday.
Northeastern France and the Low Countries will be rather overcast on Tuesday with a chance of a light shower developing. Southwestern France will be dry and bright. It will be windy for Germany and Poland as a band of light rain moves southward through the morning and early afternoon. Following the rain band will be high winds and wintry showers. Wintry showers will develop too for the Czech Republic during the afternoon.
Denmark will have an overcast and very windy day but should remain dry. It will be windy too for the Baltic States with a mixture of rain and snow showers. Very windy too for southern Finland, Sweden and Norway with a mixture of heavy rain and snow. Blizzard conditions may develop for southern Norway.


Wednesday
Wednesday will continue to be mainly dry and fine for Portugal, Spain, the Balearics, Corsica and Sardinia while southern portions of Italy will see some heavy rain and snow showers develop during the afternoon. It will be a dry day for Greece with cloud building in from the north through the day. Some heavy downpours will persist through the morning for southwestern Turkey.
France and Benelux will stay largely dry and bright on Wednesday though some cloud may start to build from the north as the day progresses. Snow is expected for much of Switzerland and Austria. Strong northerly winds will bring cloud and some persistent snow for Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.
Winds easing through the day for Denmark which will stay mainly dry and bright on Wednesday. Strong winds and snow could create localised blizzard conditions for the Baltics and southern Finland. Strong winds too for southern Sweden which will ease through the early afternoon though it should stay dry and bright. Mainly dry and bright too for southern Norway though some snow will develop for western areas later in the day.
